WhatsApp may soon let you hide your ‘last seen’ status

(Pocket-lint) – As part of its beta testing program, WhatsApp is changing some privacy options in its app to allow you to hide your online status.

As you know, when you send messages to your friends, colleagues and acquaintances, it is possible to see their “Last Seen” status next to the profile picture at the top of the screen. Using these features it is possible to see if someone is deliberately avoiding reading your messages, even if read receipts are disabled.

In the future, it may be possible to adjust this feature in the privacy settings. By going to WhatsApp Settings > Account > Privacy > Last Seen, you will be able to set who can see your last seen status. This includes hiding it from everyone or just specific contacts.

WhatsApp has been testing this on Android for some time, but is now also being tested on iOS through the TestFlight beta program.

WhatsApp is also adding more detailed privacy options for profile pictures and your About section. So if you need more privacy, there is plenty to look forward to in the future. There’s no official word on when these settings will roll out to the masses or even if they’ll reach that stage. It’s just beta testing at this point after all.
