Viber launches feature of disappearing messages in group chats

Viber’s functionality allows for customizable disappearance times, from 10 seconds to a day, as well as the ability to easily activate the disappearance function in a group chat; the app disables forwarding, copying or screenshot when the disappear option is used

Rakuten Viber, a global leader in cross-platform messaging and voice communications that recently surpassed one billion Google Play downloads globally, announces global rollout of endangered message options for group chats within the Viber app, a feature that was previously only available for one-on-one chats.

When it comes to setting messages that disappear in a group chat, users won’t need to go through a multi-step process to change the status of messages in the group. With the feature of Viber, members can easily turn the feature on and off in the chat itself.

With the extended functionality, Viber users can set messages in a group chat to disappear 10 seconds, a minute, an hour or a day after being read, providing more options than with the features of message of disappearance of other applications. On devices running Android 6 or newer, Viber will completely disable forwarding, copying or screenshot of a message when the disappear option is enabled. For earlier versions of Android and all iOS users, group chat members will be automatically notified if a member takes a screenshot of a message that is destined to disappear. The feature can be applied to any type of message including photos and stickers.

For example, if a group of people have been invited to a house party, the code to enter the door may be sent to a group chat as a message intended to disappear one minute after users read the message. .

Personal and group chats on Viber are end-to-end encrypted, so users can be sure their communications are always private and secure. The disappearing messages feature is another example of Viber’s commitment to providing a secure messaging app where users can trust the privacy of their conversations with individuals or groups.

“We are excited to give Viber users the ultimate control when sending private messages to an individual or group,” said Nadav Melnick, vice president of products for Rakuten Viber. “Privacy has long been a primary concern for us, as evidenced by our steadfast commitment to end-to-end encryption. With this update, our commitment to privacy becomes even more personal to our users and the people they talk to most.
