Opinion: How home schooling compares to school education Zoom | Opinion

Since March 2020, we have been experiencing an educational exodus from the traditional classroom to the bedrooms, living rooms and even bathrooms of students around the world.

For perhaps the first time in human history, one group was ahead of this whole distance learning fiasco: the homeschoolers.

As someone who has been homeschooled from Kindergarten to the last year of high school, I would like to share a perspective on the phenomenon and compare the difference between “Zoom University” and your typical happy and healthy family academy. .

The greatest similarity between Zoom school and homeschooling is the ability to wear pajamas throughout the day. Finding the right pajamas is an art – your holey tee and oversized boxers probably won’t do, as you might need something presentable to wear on a spontaneous trip to the store or for a unexpected visit from a neighbor.

The perfect home school uniform is one that balances function and feel, an all-weather arrangement that’s as ready for the day as you are. Sweatpants are a perfect addition to your wardrobe, and a plethora of white t-shirts on hand will never go wrong.

Really, the outfit makes the person here, and those who wake up to dress well for a day of home learning just won’t make it.

As entire schools move online, the typical student can access most of a school’s services from the comfort of their own home. The homeschooled student has similar access, although normally reduced to one or two digits: mom and dad. Stomach ache ? Go see mom, she will give you Pepto-Bismol and send you back to your studies quickly.

With distance learning, sickness-related absences are often excused; but in an environment where the school nurse, principal, teacher and caretaker are often the same person, the days off are becoming increasingly spaced out. A sick day at home is a sick day at school, full of all the pitfalls of regular classes to ensure a well-rounded education.

Perhaps the biggest difference I see between home schooling and distance learning is the environment that each cultivates. As wonderfully as many professors run their courses online, almost any student would agree that an in-person learning environment would be a better fit for their education. With home schooling, this in-person learning takes place every day and is the expectation, not the compromise.

It is a commitment that parents must be prepared to make, as it comes with the responsibility of fostering an environment in which children can grow and flourish. Many have successfully taken on the challenge and raised students who are perhaps better prepared than anyone for this new era of learning.

Although I never took my mom to the prom (yes there are dances at the house, and yes people took their moms), I have been in and around the school arena. at home long enough to see the benefits it offers. My experiences have certainly helped me through particularly strenuous online courses and allowed me to glean more from this format than some of my peers.

So, if you ever get nervous about distance learning, I encourage you to find the nearest socially awkward sweatpants wearer; they will certainly know what to do.
