WhatsApp is the most popular messaging app in the world, but for some reason its Facebook owners didn’t feel the need to make a WhatsApp app for Apple Watch. But that doesn’t mean you can’t use WhatsApp on your Apple Watch. Here’s an overview of how to set it up and what you can and cannot do with WhatsApp on Apple Watch.

Can you get WhatsApp on Apple Watch?
At the time of writing, the owners of WhatsApp, Facebook, have still not released an official version for Apple Watch. Many people are convinced that such an app will never appear, given Facebook’s desire to integrate WhatsApp more closely with Facebook Messenger and Instagram Chat instead.
However, you can still get limited WhatsApp functionality on your Apple Watch in the form of new message notifications. You can also reply to messages using voice dictation. However, you cannot enter replies to messages or view media in messages, such as pictures.
How to connect or disconnect WhatsApp to Apple Watch
First, make sure that Bluetooth is turned on on your iPhone and that your Apple Watch is connected to this Bluetooth connection. You can check by going to Settingsâ> Bluetooth.
You obviously need to have WhatsApp installed on your iPhone and enable WhatsApp notifications in iPhone settings. You can allow notifications on your iPhone by going to Settingsâ> Notificationsâ> WhatsApp. Activate Allow notifications, and activate the three alerts.
Now go to your Apple Watch app (if you haven’t installed it yet, you can get it here). Go to Notifications and scroll to the section titled MIRROR IPHONE ALERTS. Activate WhatsApp basically.
Now all WhatsApp notifications received on your iPhone will now appear on your Apple Watch. To turn off these notifications in the future, simply turn off WhatsApp in the Notifications section.
How to view and respond to WhatsApp notifications on Apple Watch
Now when a new message arrives on your iPhone’s WhatsApp, a notification will appear on your watch face. It will display the WhatsApp logo and who the message is from. Note that you cannot access old archived WhatsApp messages – you can only see new ones.
Tap the message to read it. Remember that images will appear blurry and invisible, and voice messages cannot be heard on the watch. For this you will need to go to your phone.
To reject will clear it from the screen and mark it as read in the WhatsApp iOS app. If you press To reject, you will never be able to view the message on the Apple Watch screen again.
To reply to a text message, press To respond. You then have the choice of using three response methods. The first is short, preconfigured responses called Suggestions. Tapping on one will immediately send it to the other person in WhatsApp.
You can also doodle with your finger in the middle of the screen and (hopefully) the watch will be able to read your handwriting and convert it to text.
You can also tap the microphone icon in the lower right corner to dictate your response. The emoji icon will also allow you to insert the appropriate smiley face.
Are there any third party WhatsApp apps for Apple Watch?
There are a lot of third-party WhatsApp apps out there, some good, some not so good. But when it comes to those that work with the Apple Watch, there’s a good one that fixes some of the issues highlighted above.
WatchChat 2 is an app that brings many missing features of WhatsApp to the Apple Watch. Although not an official WhatsApp app, it still has a rating of at least 4.5 out of 5 on the App Store, with many people praising customer service. The app is free with an optional in-app purchase of $ 2.99.
So what does this provide? You can read old messages, listen to and send voicemail messages, and type responses with a rudimentary keyboard, much the same way you would type SMS messages on cellphones the old-fashioned way. You can also watch videos, display stickers and images, start a new chat, and more.
Currently no. You cannot answer WhatsApp phone calls on Apple Watch. You will receive WhatsApp call notifications, but to make a WhatsApp call you need to use your phone or the desktop app.
My Apple Watch doesn’t vibrate or send a notification when a message arrives.
If you’re only missing an audio tone, you’ve probably turned on Do Not Disturb on your watch. To turn it off, swipe up on your watch face to access settings. If the red bell icon has a diagonal line crossed, tap the icon once and the red line will disappear.
If your watch doesn’t vibrate when a notification arrives, go to your Watch app and select Sound and haptics. To assure Silent mode is off and Haptic alerts is on.
