September 26 – Mobile Meals’ Wine Gala – the biggest fundraiser of the year for this organization that delivers food to those confined to their homes – travels to Italy.
Travel via Zoom, that is, for an Italian wine tasting tour.
After canceling the 2020 Wine Gala and hosting a non-online event that still managed to raise over $ 25,000 (vs. $ 80,000 for the usual in-person party), this year they’re inviting anyone who donates to mobilemeal.org/vin to join them for an exclusive and specially organized Giro d’Italia virtual wine tasting event from 5 p.m. to 6.30 p.m. on October 9.
Any donation on this page will give you access to the tasting; but because this is a fundraiser for an exceptionally worthy cause, the suggested minimum bid is $ 50. (Feel free to be even more generous, if you can.)
New variants of the coronavirus and “another flare,” said my friend Carolyn Fox, associate executive director of Mobile Meals, have prompted the organization to be even more cautious.
So, rather than gathering indoors for a big party, everyone heads to cyberspace for a charming and lively presentation featuring Nicola Biscardo, a premium wine importer from Verona, Italy.
Mr. Biscardo will discuss four distinctive wines: NotteBianca brut Emilia IGT from Cantina Carpi, a sparkling variety from central Italy; the Gavi “Ca’Adua” from Fontanassa, a white wine, and the Marchesi Biscardo Corvina della Provincia di Verona IGT, a red from the presenter’s cellar, both from the north; and Borgo Dei Trulli Primitivo Salento, a red wine from the sunny south.
The wines are now on sale at Walt Churchill’s Market in Perrysburg (not at the Maumee store), 26625 N. Dixie Hwy., And cost $ 65.96 for a set of four; they will be packaged in a specially designed tote, available while supplies last. Note that you don’t have to taste the wines to fully experience the program, but you will certainly have a better time if you do.
Proceeds from this tasting will benefit Mobile Meals delivery services, which provide one or two meals a day to the elderly, disabled or unable to access adequate food. In 2020 alone, volunteers and staff brought more than 234,000 meals to clients’ homes.
I love events like this virtual version of Wine Gala that allows me to stay home (my boyfriend, Craig doesn’t have to be our designated driver), dress comfortably (no shopping for a new outfit, so there’s more money to donate to Mobile Meals), while having fun discovering food and wine pairings. And, as if we need an extra push to support a good cause, Ms Fox also notes that Mr Biscardo “has a cute accent!”
Speaking of pairings, Ms Fox also said that while you’re collecting wines from Churchill’s, you’ll want to get good cheeses, salumi and cold cuts, bread, olives, and other “side items to eat. nibble during the tasting “. She also stressed that this event “is perfect for a small gathering of close friends” who may want to get together and socialize on a Saturday night.
Sip wine, savor a sample of Italy, and support mobile meals at the same time.
Seems like a perfect evening to me.
