By Aaron Humes: Belize Telemedia Limited (BTL), doing business as Digi, has informed customers of attempted scams using Facebook-owned WhatsApp instant messaging app.

The crooks, he says, attempt to engage the victim by sending a code through a short message service (SMS) and a phone call.

When you repeat the code to the scammer, they can log into your WhatsApp account from another device and lock you. They then repeat the trick with other members of your contact list and those who fall victim to it are also locked out of their accounts.

The company statement said, “Digi urges all mobile customers to remain vigilant and ignore any request to share their WhatsApp 6-digit verification code and enable two-step verification.”
